What is implant treatment?

An implant is placed and an artificial tooth is made on top of it.It's embarrassing to wear dentures because you can see the springs.
Implant treatment is recommended for such patients.
You can enjoy chewing and talking as if you had real teeth.

Advantages of implants

  • Various dissatisfactions and worries such as food restrictions and discomfort due to missing teeth are resolved.
  • Since the dentures are firmly fixed, there is no "slipping" or "displacement" caused by dentures.
  • You can enjoy meals without worrying about public places such as restaurants and travel destinations.
  • It is so natural that it is difficult to distinguish it from natural teeth.
  • Easy to clean.

Comparison with other treatments

There are generally three methods of treatment for missing teeth: dentures, bridges, and implants.
Each has the following characteristics.

イ ン プ ラ ン ト denture bridge
good point
  • You can chew like you would with natural teeth.
  • High esthetics comparable to natural teeth.
  • Do not damage surrounding teeth.
  • Implants add strength to the jawbone, which prevents it from shrinking.
  • It can handle large defects that cannot be dealt with by bridges.
  • The treatment is relatively simple, and treatment costs are low for normal dentures.
  • Since it is a fixed type, there is no sense of incongruity.
Points to remember
  • It requires surgery similar to removing a tooth.
  • As a result of the examination, implant treatment may not be possible.
  • Treatment costs are higher than general dentures and bridges.
  • Decreased chewing power and may have trouble chewing hard objects.
  • Difficult to remove and clean.
  • It is easy for food to get stuck in the mouth and become unsanitary.
  • It is easy to feel a sense of incongruity in the mouth, such as rattling or being worried about the clasp.
  • In the case of partial dentures, the burden on neighboring teeth supported by springs is large (easily causing tooth decay).
  • Appearance (aesthetics) may not be good.
  • I may not be able to pronounce it well.
  • The jawbone is getting thinner.
  • Adjacent healthy teeth must be ground down to support the bridge.
  • Air leaks can make it difficult to pronounce.
  • The jawbone can become thin and the teeth may become misaligned.
  • A heavy burden is placed on the supporting tooth, which may cause the tooth to be lost in the future.
  • Food debris can get stuck between the bridge bridge and the gums, making the mouth unhygienic.

Bone regeneration for implant

If the height or width of the jawbone is small, implant treatment cannot be performed as it is.
A socket lift or sinus lift may be performed.

socket lift

“Socket lift” is a treatment performed after inserting a graft bone or bone substitute material through the insertion opening of the implant body and safely pushing up the floor of the maxillary sinus to enlarge the bone.A drill is used to leave about 1mm of bone at the position where the implant is to be placed, and a special instrument (osteotome) is used to push up the maxillary sinus. After that, when the floor of the maxillary sinus lifts, the implant is placed and the procedure ends. There is almost no postoperative swelling and no hospitalization is required.

  • A special instrument (osteotome) is used to push up the floor of the maxillary sinus.
  • Bone grafting material is injected into the pushed up part.
  • A special instrument is used to increase bone density at the bottom of the maxillary sinus.
  • Once enough bone height is secured for implant placement, the implant is placed.
sinus lift

“Sinus lift” is a pretreatment before implant placement that is performed when the width of the maxillary bone is wide and narrow and implant treatment is impossible as it is.A hole is made on the side of the maxillary bone and the Schneider membrane covering the maxillary sinus is peeled off from the alveolar bone and lifted to create a gap between the maxillary bone and the maxillary sinus.Insert your own bone or bone substitute material into the gap from the side of the bone to increase the bone. After the bone augmentation is completed, a special membrane is applied and the gingiva is sutured. If the original jawbone is thick enough, it can be done at the same time as the operation. Then, the implant is placed into the newly formed bone.

  • Implants cannot be placed when the alveolar bone is depleted.
  • A bone graft or bone graft material is inserted into the bottom of the maxillary sinus, which is the thin part of the alveolar bone.
  • Once the implant has fused with the bone, the abutment is attached.
  • Finally, the superstructure (crown part) is attached and the treatment is complete.
socket lift sinus lift
good point
  • Relatively simple procedure
  • low risk of infection
  • less surgically invasive
  • Possible even in cases with little bone height
Points to remember
  • Not applicable if the bone height is less than 5mm.
  • Large surgical invasion
  • long duration of treatment

Risk of implant periodontal disease

Implants are man-made, so you don't have to worry about cavities, but there is a possibility of periodontal disease.
Gum disease can cause the surrounding bone to melt and the implant to fall out.

Once the implant surgery is complete, it doesn't end there.
In order to continue using the implant for a long time, regular maintenance is necessary.
You should also use interdental brushes and dental floss to keep your mouth clean.

Other risks

If you are allergic to titanium, you may experience allergic symptoms after having implants.
If you have experienced metal allergy symptoms from jewelry in the past, please consult your doctor before treatment.

  • have severe tooth decay
  • have a systemic disease or chronic disease
  • Thin or few jaw bones
  • During pregnancy

Such patients are considered to be at high risk for implant treatment.
However, in any case, it does not mean that implants cannot be performed, so please consult with your doctor.
